sean-averyIn all sports, there is trash talk. But, there is trash talk, and then there is trash talk gone too far. Sean Avery cross that line this week in making inappropriate remarks about former girlfriends. And the NHL struck back quickly, suspending him indefinitely . And Dallas Stars owner Tom Hicks said that if the NHL had not suspended him, the Stars would have. He and the Stars organization support the decision. Hicks would not comment on Avery’s future with the Stars. And of course, there are Avery’s teammates, who are the ones that really suffer, as they are associated with him. But they are not happy with him and believe he did indeed cross the line. His integrity with his teammates, the league and the fans has been destroyed now.

Today, of course, Sean Avery gave a public apology:

“I would like to sincerely apologize for my off-color remarks to the press yesterday from Calgary,” Avery said in a statement obtained by

“I should not have made those comments and I recognize that they were inappropriate. It was a bad attempt to build excitement for the game, but I am now acutely aware of how hurtful my actions were. I caused unnecessary embarrassment to my peers as well as people I have been close with in the past.

“I apologize for offending the great fans of the NHL, the commissioner, my teammates, my coaching staff and the Dallas Stars management and ownership. As many of you know, I like to mix it up on and off the ice from time to time, but understand that this time I took it too far.”

Since this is NOT his first incident for bad behavior, it is too little too late. Tomorrow, he has a hearing with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman. I, personally, do not wish him good luck. I hope that they not only keep the suspension, but maybe just kick him out of the league all together. He needs to grow up and quit acting like a child.
